Back in September 2024, we joined the Totally Oral Podcast for a fantastic conversation with host and good friend, Dr. Russell Schafer. Having known Dr. Schafer since Smilecon 2022, it was the perfect opportunity for our co-founders, Bill Chou and Dr. Sylvie Liu, along with VP of Business Development Ryan Axelson, to sit down and pull back the curtain on how we are building the future of AI crown design.
For those new to our ecosystem, Dentscape is an AI crown design software built specifically for dental labs. It is a cloud-based dental CAD that proposes full-contour restorations from an intraoral scan and seamlessly hands them over to a technician for final review.
This episode offered a candid, behind-the-scenes look at our early days in September 2024—before the platform evolved into its current form—exploring how AI is truly "done" in dentistry and why human expertise remains irreplaceable.
Nearly two years is a long time in the AI category. Here is a look back at our conversation with Dr. Schafer, what has held true, and how our technology has evolved.
The Unchanged Vision: Cloud-Based AI Dental CAD
As we discussed with Dr. Schafer, Dentscape is designed to act as a layer that sits on top of a lab’s existing workflow, not a replacement for it. We focus on crowns, bridges, and their print-ready models. We do not scan, we do not mill, and we do not replace the CAD seat a lab already owns.
That scope has remained identical since our recording. Our reasoning for building dental CAD entirely in a browser also hasn't changed. Historically, adding design software meant acquiring a heavy workstation, dealing with installations, and managing dongles. Building in the browser removes those barriers.
The real advantage of the cloud isn't just convenience—it's batch processing.
The machine on the bench only has to open a tab, while the heavy lifting happens elsewhere. A batch of 100 crowns can be returned in about 10 minutes because the work runs in parallel. That kind of speed is impossible for a single workstation under a bench, no matter how powerful the graphics card.
The Evolution: From Generic Output to Adaptive AI Crown Design
What has changed since that episode is everything about how the design itself is produced.
Back then, the open question we discussed with Dr. Schafer was: Can AI output be good enough to ship?
Once that was answered, a more complex question emerged: Good enough by whose standard?
After interviewing hundreds of technicians, one critique of AI design surfaced repeatedly: "Every crown looks the same." An anatomically correct crown that looks like an industry average is not a finished case for a lab whose clients rely on their custom, signature work.
Modern AI dental CAD shouldn't replace a technician's judgment; it should remove the repetitive first 80% of each design. The critical part is what the remaining 20% is built upon.
This is the exact problem Dentscape set out to solve. During setup, Dentscape's Adaptive AI calibrates directly to a lab's own historical cases. The baseline it designs from is that specific lab's unique morphology, not a generic template.
